I/O Picnic

This is our first event of the academic year. It usually takes place on one of the first three weekends of the fall semester at a faculty member’s house. It is a potluck and everyone who attends brings food or drink to share. This year (2008) Zinta hosted the picnic. Playing games has also been a tradition (e.g., bocce ball, croquet).

I/O Banquet

This event takes place in November. The second years make the arrangements (i.e., location, food choices). Past locations include: private rooms in restaurants, hotel banquet rooms, or the Fort Collins Country Club. The first-years are in charge of the entertainment. Live entertainment is welcome, but the norm has been a video format. The evening starts with a cocktail hour followed by a formal sit-down dinner. After dinner, the George Thornton Student of the Year Award is presented to an outstanding student who has completed her/his master’s degree. This year (2008), we had a tie. Josh Liff and Brian Hurd share the award. Then banquet usually ends around 9pm and those who want to continue the festivities head to a bar in Old Town.

Recruitment Weekend

Recruitment weekend is usually held in March. Students that are accepted to the program are invited to come to Fort Collins to meet the faculty and current students. Activities include sitting-in on our weekly seminar, a welcome potluck dinner, learning about the I/O curriculum and the Department of Psychology policies/procedures, graduate student panel Q & A, visiting a local brewery, dinner & drinks in Old Town, and various other opportunities unique to Fort Collins (e.g., hiking). The current students help pick up our visitors from the airport, plan activities/events, and coordinate transportation between activities.

Speakers

We generally have several speakers throughout the academic year. Some speakers are arranged by the OHP group or faculty members, but IOPAC usually books at least one major speaker (e.g, Wayne Cascio) each year. Speakers include academics from other universities or practitioners from an organization that employs I/O psychologists (e.g., Sun Microsystems) Many alumni have come back to CSU to give brown bag presentations.

Special Events

Last spring (2008), IOPAC students hosted the annual IOOB conference in Denver.

This fall (2008) IOPAC coordinated a ‘welcome hike’ to bond with our new students.

IOPAC students also participate in the hiring process for new faculty, which involves attending job talks, holding student Q & A sessions, and participating in other related events.
